College Admission Guidelines for Junior Year

Maintain good grades and register for a strong senior year program.

Register for the March or the May SAT (and in April for the June SAT:Subject Tests if you plan to apply to one or more of the 60 schools that require SAT: Subject Tests). Plan to take the SAT again in October or November of your senior year if needed. (Also, if needed, finish taking SAT: Subject Tests in November and/or December of your senior year. You should plan to take two or three SAT: Subject tests. Consult college catalogs/websites and/or click here for specific requirements.) Maintain a file folder for all materials. All colleges accept the ACT test instead of the SAT. Obtain ACT test materials and register early in May for the June ACT test. Early Decision/EarlyAction candidates should complete the SAT or ACT and two or three SAT: Subject Tests in the junior year if required by the ED/EA college.

Make an appointment with your counselor to review appropriate programs and colleges.

Make an appointment with the Career Center during second semester to obtain a list of colleges for you to consider. Allow plenty of time to learn about, consider and discuss your college choices.

Consult references and catalogs in the Career Center. Compare colleges and discuss your college choices with your parents. Select a tentative list of colleges to apply to. Write or email these colleges and request a catalog and applications for admission and financial aid. Determine a list of colleges to visit during the spring, summer and early fall. If possible, arrange for an admissions interview.

In the spring of junior year, be sure to ask one junior year teacher to complete a Newton North High School Teacher Assessment. This assessment will be included in your Senior Packet. A Teacher Assessment form will be given to you by the counseling department for this purpose.
